Turmeric, Ginger and Mango Smoothie

Whew!  Its been a busy week…and especially a busy weekend!  Who knew that President’s Day was a big vacation weekend?  Well I am guessing some of you out there actually did…but me?  I lived in a foreign country for the first 5 years of my adult life…away from American holidays and American school vacations.  And upon returning, I have not worked in those mainstream career paths that give people vacation days on national holiday…  So personally I had no idea that work would be busy this weekend.

If you didn’t know already, I am (amongst other things) a massage therapist and as I near completion of my first year at the spa that I work at, I am slowly learning the trends of the business.  What days, weeks, months, are busy, and when the down-time is.  Note to self, things actually pick up around long weekends like Martin Luther King weekend and President’s Day.  So I am pooped!  And grateful…so appreciative to have the work!

Now I am catching my breath and looking forward to sleeping in a little tomorrow.  Do you hear that Boo?  Boo (the cat) can be a little pushy and disrespectful of my sleep.  She is a sweetheart but she snores louder than some humans and if she isn’t snoring she is purring (even louder) or licking herself (which shakes the whole bed).  So the rules are that she is not allowed to sleep near me.  Do you think she respects that rule?

One thing that has been getting me through the mornings lately is this Turmeric Smoothie.  It is good!  It sort of developed over time with many variations, including the one where I dropped way too much turmeric into the blender.  You see, I don’t usually measure what I am making, unless I am going to share a recipe on the blog.  And the turmeric container does not have one of those handy shaker tops to make sure that only a little comes out at a time…so sometimes my laziness can lead to disaster.  Warning for those of you who have not consumed turmeric very often – too much can be quite bitter!

But don’t discount it yet.  Turmeric has amazing healing properties including:

  • antiseptic and antibacterial
  • liver detoxing
  • anti-inflammatory
  • pain reliever
  • aids in metabolism and weight management
  • speeds up wound healing
  • helps skin issues like psoriasis
  • antioxidants

and much more!  Turmeric has even been used in studies to aid Alzheimer’s patients, cancer patients and childhood leukemia.  Personally I don’t see why you wouldn’t want to add a little of this to your smoothie in the morning.

Turmeric SmoothieTurmeric Smoothie

makes 2 medium smoothies or one large

1 ripe banana
1/2 cup frozen mango chunks
1 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon coconut oil
fresh grated ginger (size of a small grape)
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

1/4 cup coconut milk (canned)
1/2 cup water

Add the first 6 ingredients above to a blender and blend on high speed until smooth.

Turn off blender.  Add last 2 liquid ingredients (replace lid) and blend again to incorporate.

Pour into a large smoothie glass and enjoy!

Note: As you develop your taste for turmeric you will probably be able to add more in.  The flavor can be bitter so be cautious if you are not familiar with the spice.

    I’m a big fan of Tumeric in the smoothie. I make one (that’s more like a warm soup) with greens, spirilina, chia, ginger, garlic, parsley, coconut oil, and warm water….it is remarkably good (says a friend who enjoyed her serving, but suggested that she’d like it for lunch!) Huzzah super foods in a blender in a belly nourishing us whole.

    Out of curiosity, why the coconut oil? Do you put it in solid? Thanks.

      Hi Mara,

      I add coconut oil because of its health and nutritional properties. It is great to get a few tablespoons per day, so I find that in a smoothie is one good way to do it. I add it in straight from the jar, whether it is solid or liquid (depending on room temp). Depending on the blender that you use it might not mash up every but of oil, but I don’t mind a clump here or there. If you have a vitamix I am sure it would come out perfectly. (It also helps thicken the smoothie a little when it does blend up nicely.)

    Hi There!
    I am SO happy to have found this recipe! My mom suffers from progressive multiple sclerosis and she recently found out that turmeric can help with the symptoms! Some of the recipes we have tried were very bitter! I like the idea of adding as little or as much turmeric as you want, which allows someone like my mom who doesn’t really like it, to get used to it!
    Also, I have not had a chance to look at your whole website, but do you have an e-newsletter or recipe book?

    Hi, want to try this tomorrow but have no fresh ginger in the house, would ground ginger work?

      Hi JB,

      Ground ginger is going to be a slightly different experience. Depending on the freshness of your ground ginger, it might not have as much of a “kick” as fresh ginger root but it is worth a try. The other thing is that you will probably need to add it in slowly, to taste, as the ratio of ground to fresh varies…
