Raw Apple Sauce

Raw Apple Sauce

Ever since I moved out West, I have been a big fan of Vitamin Cottage.  I find it more down-to-earth than Whole Foods, and with better prices on most items…and has more gluten-free, health geared options than Trader Joe’s.  So, a large percentage of my shopping is completed here… But I am definitely one to price out the best deals at each store, and shop around.  I thank my Grammie for that influence.  She would always know which store to go to in order to get the best deal!

One of my favorite deals at Vitamin Cottage is the $1 produce bin.  Sometimes you can get some great stuff!  Lately I have been getting bags of organic apples for $1.  Sure they have some bruises on them, so I might not want to eat them as is, but they are great for baking, and great for apple sauce!

Raw Apple SauceThis past week I had 2 bags of apples from the $1 bin and was excited to create the easiest raw apple sauce.  Yes, my Grammie did teach me to make cooked apple sauce, and it is delicious, but…raw apple sauce is just as good, is a lot faster to make…and its RAW.  You are getting all the nutrients of the fresh apple, just in a different format.

I also use raw apple sauce when I am baking (yes, it is no longer raw then, but it is quick).  If something calls for apple sauce, I just whip up a fresh apple…no cooking, no jars.  Easy-peasy.  So, try this out and let me know what you think.  I am loving it, and eating it by the spoonful.

4 apples
1/2 lemon
cinnamon

Peel and core the apples and cut them into chunks.  Add them to a food processor and pulse to puree the apples.  You will need to open the food processor and scrape down the sides a few times to make sure all of the chunks get blended.

Add the juice from the 1/2 lemon and a dash of cinnamon.  More if you prefer lots of cinnamon.

Puree one last time until all of the ingredients are combined and the apples are completely pureed.

Serve and enjoy!

Christine I just tried your raw apple sauce recipe and it’s easy and super delicious. I’ll never have rotten apples again. Thanks.

I never even thought to make apple sauce without cooking it, but this makes so much sense! I will be trying this soon. Also, $1 for a bag of organic apples is a steal!

Wow, I love the $1 bin at my local asian market and am always picking up good deals, plus the fruit is barely bruised and days from being uneatable. I just got a vitamix for my birthday and I love to make applesauce, but have always cooked it, of course you could do this raw! I can’t wait to try this, thanks!

Looks great! Do you think I can store some in a jar for a few days?

      Thanks Rebecca,

Yes! It will definitely last a few days in a jar. I always take a few days to go through my apple sauce.

  5. Love it. Used to eat applesauce regularly before I went raw. Excited to try this- looks like a great texture from the picture. Have you tried leaving the peels on?

      Hi Adria,

I am glad you are excited to try it! I haven’t tried it with the peels on before. I am guessing that if you have an excellent blender/food processor it will be great. Let me know what you think.

Do you need to peel them or do you think the peelings would add for better nutritional value. I wanted to try this in my blend tec
